This rendition
of the famous "Gullwing" sports car is based on a model
by Björn Doppke from "Brickpark"
(and of course on the real car, too).
According to his webpage, the model was originally intended as a gift
for good Mercedes customers, but never made it into final production.

When Björn
sold his one of a kind model on ebay, I was placing bids for it
also but didn't win the auction. Now
it seemed the only way to get this great model was to build one
myself. Björn was kind enough to send me some pictures, which
really helped me out. But among some other changes, I totally reworked
the engine.

The wheels
of the 8479 set plus the added radar dish were ideal for a classic
car like this. As the rims were white, I chose this color for the
rest of the car also. Besides, white was the only color small parts
were available from shop@home. So I ordered a bunch of 5320 service
packs and started building.

I needed
8 of those #2449 inverted 75° slope bricks for the wheel arches,
but I had only 4 of them (from two 5533 sets), so I had to use 4
regular slope bricks upside down. To get the inverted arch bricks
for the seats, I had to buy two 6032 sets. For his original model,
Björn had used a sticker for the "Mercedes Star"
emblem.

But I decided
that the small 3 spiked steering wheel was an ideal choice to be
used for this purpose. The only stickers I used were for the rear
lights, license plates and dashboard.
